This here's Homer 0.93.3, a Mac IRC client. IRC is the
Internet Relay Chat, a way to talk in a pretty much real-time
fashion to thousands of other people all around the world.
Homer tries to provide a friendly Mac-like interface to the
IRC jungle. It features a funky-looking full-color interface
with all sorts of interesting buttons to push and things to
do. You get to see little icon faces of other users, you can
have Homer speak to you (if you have Apple's Speech Manager
installed), and lots more. Two versions of Homer are
included, one for people who use MacTCP-type connections to
the Internet, and one for people who dial into their unix
account using a modem.
This version of Homer requires a 68020 or better. You can
FTP to zaphod.ee.pitt.edu if you need a version which runs on
a 68000-based Mac.

Subject: [*] Sound Master 1.7.4
This is the eagerly awaited (by me anyway) update of Sound Master. The list
of changes from 1.7.3 is lengthy and included in the submission. From my
admittedly warped perspective, the best thing about the new version is that
I now get my startup sound under the new Sound Manager. It warms my cockles,
whatever they may be, to hear an apparently sweet young thing say "Hello,
master. What can I do for you today?" upon startup. Not very politically
correct, to be sure, but cockle warming.

Not anymore! Now you too can use all the nifty new features of
SoundTrecker 2.0 without knowing a word of German (except Heizkorper,
which means radiator).
The SoundTrecker->English 3 patch was a good start, but there are some
mistakes and many things left untranslated (such as the shareware message
in the about box). This version contains all new mistakes by a different
translator, and much less stuff is left untranslated.
The manual and license are, unfortunately, still in German only. However,
there is a brief English-language doc file which will hopefully suffice
for now.
If anyone out there can complete the translation, or create a patch file
to turn version 2.0, 2.0e, and 2.0e3 into 2.0eng4, please contact me.

Subject: [*] Symbionts 2.3.3
Symbionts is an extension that monitors the startup process. Symbionts
displays the name and number of bytes of memory each system extension
allocates from the system heap. The name and number appear beneath the
extension's icon, and since the name is usually truncated, Symbionts also
displays it in the menu bar. Symbionts even shows the icons for those
extensions that don't normally reveal themselves.
Symbionts Control is a control panel that sets the preferences for the
Symbionts extension. It also allows the review of the information collected
by the Symbionts extension. Additionally, the control panel is used to
manage the loading of system extensions without having to dig around in the
System folder. Extensions can be enabled and disabled simply by
double-clicking on the extension icon and name.
Version 2.3.3 corrects the following problems.
- Fixed problems with Quadra 840AV (although the extension sizes may not be
exact with some ROM versions).
- Fixed incompatibility with Jasik's "The Debugger" who overlays low-memory
globals used by the extension loader.
- Fixed problem with the Symbionts Control control panel which would hang on
some machines if the desktop database was missing system icons.

ZoomToCursor FKEY v1.0.2
My housemate just got a new PowerBook Duo 230, which she loves except for
the problem of the cursor sometimes being hard to find on the supertwist
(FSTN) liquid-crystal display. So I wrote a little FKEY for her.
ZoomToCursor is sort of like the homing device from a bad science-fiction
movie. When you press its key combination (cmd-shift-0), it quickly draws a
set of bold concentric circles of decreasing size onto the screen, centered
on the cursor. The effect is a little like the way the Finder "zooms"
windows open and closed, except without the Finder's subtlety.
Because ZoomToCursor is an FKEY, you need a copy of ResEdit or Resourcerer
to install it into your System file. If you are already using the
cmd-shift-0 combination, you can change ZoomToCursor's resource ID to
something else (preferably between 5 and 9).

Due to some unfortunate reason, the file was corrupted on the disk. This might
have
been due to a bad disk/diskette, a AC line spike while it was being written, a
bug in
a backgrounded application, a virus, bad karma, etc. In our experience, the
most
common point of corruption is where some external object was inserted (an Excel
graph
or table, a picture, an equation, etc.).
Perhaps some hotshot Microsoft wizard can come up with a utility to automate
this
recovery recipe, but what we've done is determine the exact spot where the
error
occurs. This entails crashing Word a couple of times, in order to establish
this from
both ends of the file, starting from the top and from the bottom of a copy of
the
damaged file. Once this is done, you place the insertion point as close to that
point
as you can, going from top to bottom, then go to the end of the file and scroll
back
as near as possible. Shift-clicking will select the damaged area, that can then
be
deleted, rendering most of the file usable.
Another approach is working with two copies. On the first one, you place the
insertion point as close to the error as possible, starting from top, then
delete the
rest of the file. On the second one, you start from the bottom and delete to
the
beginning, then you join the two surviving halves.
Basically, the trick is scrolling as close to the error as possible, without
letting
it be scrolled onto the visible region, which would cause Word to crash. With a
little luck and deft touch, you can usually get away with losing half a page or
less
(the area occupied by the corrupted external object), which is certainly much
better
than losing the whole document!
Hope this helps.
Juan
P.S. Before I forget to mention this, it is an excellent idea to check out your
disk
immediately after Word or any other application crashes, using Disk First Aid
or
another good directory checker. This catches most directory corruption problems
at
the onset, before more serious damage and data loss occurs. DFA can be run in
"Verify
only" mode, if the system didn't crash; if damage is found, you can then reboot
using
the Disk Tools diskette to carry out the needed repairs. Norton can usually
carry out
repairs without needing to reboot.

You may wish to try Symbionts Control, which is a startup file manager but also
allows one to select what the author calls a new and improved icon display
format. I would agree with the author about it being an improvement. Basically
it shows extensions and control panels as they load in a very tidy white
background area at the bottom of the screen that scrolls up as more rows are
needed. It also shows the amount of memory each is using below the icon,
optionally shows the name under the icon and/or in the menu bar as they load,
optionally allows one to see items that don't normally display icons at startup
and last but certainly not least, shows the total system heap space used once
everything's been loaded. As if that weren't enough, it's a heck of a startup
document manager as well! A very elegant solution, IMHO.

Holding down the command-option combination to rebuild desktops only works when
the Finder is trying to mount the volume in question and it brings up a
confirmation dialog so there's little worry of doing this unintentionally. When
sapping the PRAM, one needs to start or restart the Mac then immediately hold
the command-option-p-r key combination until the happy Mac icon comes up and
then the Mac bongs again and begins the restart sequence, at which time the
keys
should be released. I think you'll find no conflict between these two
exercises.

In version 1.0.3 of TechTool, this issue has been addressed. TechTool stores
the
manufacture date and hours of use in an extension which restores those 4 bytes
into PRAM during the reboot following zapping the PRAM and then removes the
extension from your hard disk automatically.
It's so easy to get burned by blanket statements, isn't it? ;)
Along with your caution regarding monitor settings there are other items users
may wish to reset following a PRAM zap as well. 32 bit addressing will usually
need to be turned back on in the Memory control panel and with older versions
of
Apple's Networking software (pre 1.4.1 I believe), ethernet will need to be
reselected in the Network control panel (if you're on ethernet of course).

A firewall's purpose is to slow down someone who might be trying to break
into your corporate network from the internet. By their very nature, they
need to be difficult to get through. For this reason, many firewalls are
homebrewed on site. A cracker tries to get through it and since it is new
code to them, it will take them much longer to break through it.
So, when you ask "Has anyone out there been able to access the Internet
through a firewall?" the answer is "ours does that, how come yours
doesn't?"
The only way you are going to get through your firewall is if the powers
that be at ARCO decide to allow you to gain access through their firewall.
They have to rig it with that functionality.
Here are several technological ways they could do that.
They could change their code to allow connections initiated on the ARCO
side of the firewall to happen as long as the connection is active and the
machine on the ARCO side is in a database of valid machines.
They could have you telnet into the firewall access machine before trying
to get through. You would enter your firewall access password, and then for
a period of some time, it would allow connections from your machine to pass
through.
They could install a filtering router as a firewall bypass and individually
enter machine addresses that are allowed to communicate through the
filtering router.
Etc.
There are as many schemes for allowing access through a firewall as there
are firewalls. Basically it is a political problem not a technological
problem. If all you users at ARCO start a concerted effort to convince
management that this is something that needs to happen, it will.

Subbarayudu,
I think I'm not quite clear on the exact problem you're having. Do you have
MacTCP from Apple installed? If you do than you should be able to use
Fetch, Turbo Gopher, NCSA Telnet, Mosaic and a like to acomplish all your
Internet needs.
I currently use all of the above for the various Internet access at my
client site; who also has a firewall for their Unix network.
I hope this helps!

Sorry for the long delay in responding... I am currently working on a
network extension (read adev) to connect macs (or routers) as an appletalk

Routers can do this, but there are advantages to this method) .This tool

The program is called "UDPTalk" (for lack of a flashier name). The

Subject: Applications "lost" after desktop rebuilt
Recently I rebuilt the desktop, for the first time, on the domestic Mac.
After that, when we would double-click on a document, the dialog box
"document can't be opened because the application that created it can't
be found" would appear. This happened with (at least) Fullwrite Pro 1.5s,
Aldus FreeHand 3.1, and Framemaker 3. We were mystified.
Launching an application and then going back to the finder and double-
licking on a document created by the application would allow the docu-
ment to open just fine. Later, I discovered that the appications could
once again be automatically located if I moved the application (program)
from the folder it lives in to any other folder or to the hard disk's
window.
This is a IIci running System 7 with the first two tune-ups (not up-
graded to 7.1 yet). I keep an alias of each application (program) in
the hard disk's window; each application has a folder in which the
application (program) lives (I tend to do vanilla installations).
I hope this isn't a FAQ because I tried to consult all the references I
could before bothering this group, but I can't seem to find this behav-
ior explained anywhere. Or is the "move your applications around" dance
just part of rebuilding your desktop?
Thanks in advance for *any* enlightenment!

I forwarded the original complaint on to Paul McGraw, vice-president
at APS <71520.72@CompuServe.COM>, and here's his response.
# I'm not sure how to respond. Unfortunately, when a new ad is placed
# every week or every month, there are occasional errors. Whether Mark
# agrees or finds it offensive, the reality is that all ads note that
# "all prices and specifications are subject to change without notice".
# When selling at a lower price is possible, we'll always try to
# accommodate the customer. Intentionally selling at a loss is
# something we must try to avoid to remain viable. It's kind of
# unreasonable when we advertise hundreds of prices for very much more
# expensive products in our ads, and which Mark is also welcome to
# inquire about, that we would intentionally mislead customers over a
# $29 item. When a misprint occurs, we tell the customer it was a
# misprint. All ads are disclaimed, and I can only apologize that when
# a misprint occurs. Each ad goes through ten levels of checks, yet,
# occasionally a misprint nonetheless does occur. In the case of the
# SCSI Boy product, if Mark really feels that we've intentionally
# misled him (noting that we advertise several hundred much more highly
# priced products in any given ad and that is one of the few to have
# had an inaccurate insertion in the last year), please ask him to send
# me his address and phone and I'll be happy to provide him one at no
# charge.
Take that as you will... whether or not you agree, it seems pretty
up-front to me.
cheers ... -Adam

Nah, I guess he ran out of hardbounds...;-) Michael Crichton's fame and fortune

Not surprised. Crichton's excellence, both in terms of plot as well as factual

I recommend MathPad (version 2.1.5 - info-mac/sci/mathpad-215.hqx), which
is a relatively small application (can run in 150K) that evaluates
mathematical expressions in a text window rather than giving a graphical

As a former DOS/Windows user who has switched over to a Centris 650, I
have a very simple question (My apologies if this is not the proper

>From my PC to my Mac. As a result, these files all have the same "date
modified." This, when I sort a folder's files by date, files created or
last modified in 1990 have the same recent date as files created/modified
in 1992 or whatever, and sorting by date is useless. On my DOS machine,
there were several utilties that allowed me to quickly/simply change the
date of (re-date) my files. Does such a utility exist for the Mac, and if
so, how can I obtain it? It strikes me as a simple, useful thing to be
able to do, especially if an old file is modified to correct an error
later discovered and one wants to still have the file's effective date to
correspond with the date of its creation. Thanks.

Well much as I like ClarisWorks, I have to say I find it can be just that
little bit sluggish for what it is. This isn't inconsistent with the kind of
spurious CPU cycles Monitor attributes to it. I also find that QuickTime movies

If you use Eudora for your email needs, it has a "Paste as quotation" option,
that will do exactly what you want; matter of fact, that's how I composed this
reply. In will also reflow the text as needed, before pasting the > prefixes.
Another option would be using a desk-accessory text editor called McSink. It
has a prefix/suffix string option. It can autopaste the clipboard onto its
buffer upon opening it, let you munge the contents as needed, then autopaste it
back to the clipboard upon closing, which practically automates the process.
Last I checked, Sumex had the latest version, 7-something, an '88 venerable
pre-System7 relic (pre System6, for that matter !), which was quite happy to
run even on 7Pro. Goes to prove that good, well-written programs never die !

to work properly in conjunction with my Panasonic answering machine.
When there are no messages, the answering machine answers on the forth

picks up (goes off hook), it listens for the CNG FAX signal. If it hears
it, it is supposed to connect, but if it hears voices, it hangs up.
It isn't working that way. The tech support says it should be working
fine. It has worked from time to time, but not consistently.
I am wondering if two DA's have the same ID number, does it cause a
conflict of the DA's sharing the same number? For example, by FaxStatus
is ID#12 and so is Suitcase II. I am using system 6.08 on a Mac SE with

Subject: Fried modem port?
On the eve of Chinese New Year my Supra modem died during a
horrendous lightning storm (it has been very wet here in Singapore for
February!). Apparently it wasn't just the external transformer unit
that went; my dealer had to replace everything. Needless to say I
have now gone and got myself some surge protectors! Anyway, when
I got my revived modem home, I found my LC475 refused to talk to
it at all. The Mac certainly didn't seem to be seeing the modem even
at startup. However when I switched the cable from the modem port to
the serial port, everything was back to normal.
What does this mean? Is my modem port likely to have got fried, and if
so what kind of repairs to my Mac would be needed to fix it? MacCheck
doesn't explicitly raise any alarms over the modem port, and no, I
haven't chosen the wrong port in my fax/terminal software. Go on,
tell me the worst - I'm already expecting to hear it (sigh).

Sorry for all the included text, but it seems appropriate to leave it be.
I do not work for Apple (no big surprise there), but can provide some
insight into ftp.apple.com. Apple paid for the hardware (a IIci), software
(A/UX) and the IP connection. That's about it (OK, the electricity to run
it, too).
All the work on supporting and maintaining the host is done on a purely
volunteer basis. The lead guy on this effort is Mark Johnson, who, last I
heard, was traipsing all over Europe, doing what Apple pays him to do.
So, the bottom line is: You can get it from ftp.apple.com. But you'll
probably have to wait for it. If you can't wait, go to your dealer and bust
him to get it off AppleLink (only a half-serious suggestion:-})

Subject: Gopher Tunnels into Resources (comment)
The talk about looking for on-line dictionaries reminded me of a topic
I've wanted to raise for a while. Many system administrators seem to
forget about Gopher when they are configuring new resources on
university servers. Hence a Veronica search will locate and get you in
to a nice commercial package like the new OED until somebody notices
the draft and slams the door--usually in a week or two. Depending on
what gopher client the user is employing, he/she may not even be aware
what server has mounted the resources being accessed, so this can be
quite innocent poaching.
However, one Canadian server (I forget which one) is programmed to give
unauthorised users an insulting message along the lines of "Thanks for
trying to illegally penetrate our server." The authors of that message
obviously don't understand the world of gopher. If you set one up and
it appears in people's menus, they have no reason to believe that they
shouldn't try it.

He will: we sold more than that many copies of IM2 in the UK alone, and
I expect IM3 will do just as well. There are many more people who
cannot access the Internet than there are who can. Those of you on this
list are, of course, the lucky ones (some of you don't even have to pay
for it), but the vast majority of the 10 million+ Mac owners have no
way of accessing the Sumex archive other than by using the CD.
By the way, you forgot that he has to give discounts to dealers and
distributors...
Speaking as a contributor to IM2 (though not, alas, to IM 3), I send my
stuff to Sumex in order to make them widely available (so I don't have
to keep emailing to people who ask for them). The IM CDs make them
available to even more people, so I don't see how I could possibly
object.

Subject: Jeopardy! for Mac
Back before Christmas, I asked for opinions or experience with the Jeopardy
game for Macintosh by GameTek. I didn't hear from anyone who had played it
(understandable, since it was brand new) but various people were
encouraging and wanted to know my experience if I decided to get it. Well,
I did, and this is what I have learned.
As I had been led to expect by others' comments on 'Wheel of Fortune', the
game is quite well done, and a good approximation of the TV show. It's a
bit awkward with three people huddling around the same keyboard to enter
their responses, but it's good for togetherness! :-) The single-keyboard
problem makes Final Jeopardy different (...now tell the others to close
their eyes while you type...) but I haven't thought of a better way to do
it. Also, the pace of the game is a bit slow for my taste, perhaps because
of the relative slowness of my IIsi. But on balance, the game is nice and
I recommend it.
There was one problem though, which prompts this message (the ending is
happy). The version I got (which must have been the very first, or close
to it) had a nasty bug which clobbered the clues given during Final
Jeopardy. Very frustrating! The good news is that GameTek was *very*
accomodating in acknowledging the problem and fixing it. I faxed them the
bug report one day, and had a response from them the next. The new program
disk was in my mailbox very shortly thereafter. Hooray for good support!
They have done a nice job on the game and on making me happy. Bottom line:
if you like Jeopardy on TV, you won't go wrong with this version.

The only shareware/freeware utility I have heard of is one called
Clean Sweep. Unfortunately, it is only available through
Ziff/Net Mac (CLNSWP.SIT, Library 9). Beside removing Word temp
files, it also looks for multiple copies of TeachText,

Sure would be nice if someone would download it from Ziff/Net Mac

You can go the commercial route and acquire Stuffit Deluxe. It comes with a
Unix Compress translator, that will take care of your problems.
On the other hand, the Free Software Foundation decided to eschew the use of
the standard Unix compress, since it is based on propietary code, so they came
up with their own compressor, called gzip (no relation to the DOS .zip code).
It has the endearing qualities of being even more efficient than the standard
code (smaller end files), is capable of decoding files processed by the
standard "compress" and is totally free.
"OK, thanks for the trivia...", you say. Well, here comes the good part. A
fellow Mac enthusiast from Spain whose name I have forgotten right now has
ported the GNU code to the Mac and released MacGzip. The latest version found
at Sumex incorporates the last GNU release (1.2.4) and is quite capable of
uncompressing any Unix .Z, .z or .gz file you care to feed it.
Go for it !

> I am using standard fonts like Helvetica 10....

> Any idea how to resolve this problem ....?
I am surprised not to see this kind of question more often. I've had a ton
of problems of this sort, and they are not restricted to either MacDraw Pro
or Microsoft Word. Other instances of the same problem are, for example,
misaligned arrow heads, gaps between what appear to be touching lines on
screen, etc.
As I understand it, the cause of the problem is the fact that the 'pict'
data on the clipboard stores 'control points' only at 72 dpi resolution.
While lines, curves, and characters are printed at any resolution the
printer provides, truncation of the control point coordinates makes the
object 'jump' to align to a 72 dpi grid. You can't see this jump on screen
which only has 72 dpi resolution.
Here are two solutions
1. Export your drawing in encapsulated postscript (EPS) form
MacDraw Pro can produce EPS files and Word 5 (don't know about older
versions) can import them. This solution is cumbersome and requires a lot
of space for EPS data but works perfectly every time.
2. While in the drawing package, make sure the 'autogrid' is switched on.
As long as the resolution of the grid you use is a divisor of 72 (e.g. 8,
9, 12 etc.) this will work fine. The maximal grid resolution of 72 dpi of
this method is really sufficient for most needs.
The whole thing is a serious flaw in the Mac interface IMHO (what you see
is almost what you get?) Simple 'cut and paste' shouldn't get you into
trouble like this. Hopefully, Quickdraw GX will make this problem go away.

I use Checkfree with Quicken and thus don't need to print any checks.
Quicken sends the payment info to Checkfree and Checkfree cuts the check
and mails it to the payee for you. For $10 a month, I send up to 30 checks.
That is 33 cents per check which includes postage. If you subtract out the
postage that Checkfree pays, I end up paying 4 cents per check for the
privledge of using Checkfree.
So, you could say that Checkfree charges $10 / 250 checks which is a tad
more reasonable than Intuit's fee. Plus, Checkfree "mails" the payment at
the last moment so that you earn more interest on your checking balance and
never make a late payment.
Just a happy customer,
